Chapter 14 - Interlude
The crackling energy of light shines all around you, it's warmth like a bath of magical healing constantly surrounding you. The magical item you wear protects your eyes from the dazzling power and your body as well preventing the energy from swelling into you and filling every piece of you until they burst, overfull with dazzling energy. You've reached the entrance to the massive structure shaped like a titantic snowflake. Cities could be build on it's surface were it flat. Instead however it's crystalline shape is irregular and all sorts of spans and chasms and jagged peaks adorn it's multifaceted surface. The bastion of souls, for that's what this is, seems to be made of the very energy surrounding you except hardened into some type of steel hard crystal. It is opaque however and if there is an inside it is hidden from you.
The body of a retriever, one of the demon spider creatures that you've encountered before floats in the brilliance behind you, though it's body is the size of a three story Inn. It's much more massive than any you've seen. It was slain in mere moments and now bristles with arrows from the party's bows. The arrows look like so many pins, but the creature is peppered with them and large gaps of smashed and splintered chitin shell form a small floating halo about the creature.
Behind you, the party leaves the defeated host of demons. Any one of the demons behind you could have rampaged and destroyed an entire town back on Faerun, but the party bested seven of them in only a couple minutes. True, one on one you would have had problems defeating a couple of them, but as a group you are a prodigious force.
Now you are free to enter upon the bastion, where within you'll find an elder dragon the likes of which the universe has never seen. Hopefully his army of children, each of whom is a force to reckon with on it's own, you will not meet. They are each ancient and powerful. With the blood of the near demi-god dragon in their veins, and each having lived ten of your lifetimes, you can only hope they are not lined up in droves protecting their father. You've already met one of his offspring, the dwarven warrior on the Cube of Koloyros, on the plane of war. He proved more than a match for the group then, but something tells you in a rematch he wouldn't stack up anymore.
Anyway, with little more than a shove from the group, Kory is pushed forward to haphazardly open the portal into the bastion. You wonder in the back of your mind if there are guardians just inside the door. Hopefully they can't see out if that's the case….they'd had more than enough time to prepare…
The door opens and your worst fears are immediately realized. As the massive crystal portal vanishes, it reveals three daunting massive figures as well as another smaller figure all the more daunting for it's smaller stature. In the fraction of a moment you have to for your brain to catch up to your body you see a bear the size of a LARGE elephant, a massive creature with three heads and a massive body, a twelve foot tall two headed monstrosity with two axes whose blades sparkle with magical energy, and finally what can only be a kobold in plate mail. They all have various facets that reveal their half-draconic heritage such as red wings, patches of red scales, or huge scaled tails.
Seeing Kory at the very front of the group, undefended, you charge forward and leap in front of her, taking an opening strike at the half-dragon/half-ettin. The creatures welcomes you into his striking range. You get the first blow but then, with each head controlling an arm, the creatures begins a deadly bloodletting. It's long gangly arms are muscled like a titan and it's axes magical edge cut through magical and mundane armor like water. You try to dodge but it's suddenly, and to your horror, evident that this ettin is no normal ettin, he also fights with the skill and combat rage of a barbarian king! You try to dodge and block and parry but he is simply too skilled and to strong. His blows smash into your crushing bone and spraying blood. You attempt to roll with the blows and escape the death dealt by his blows but he also seems to move preternaturally fast and your fear turns to panic as you take a blow to your stomach and see the second axe fall to your shoulder. The pain burns like the sun but is brief before all is blackness.
